Internship Opportunities
Catawba County is committed to fostering career development through internship experiences to as many students as possible. Internship opportunities are available on a limited basis in most County departments throughout the year. While we strive to fulfill as many requests as possible, internships are limited. For that reason, we encourage you to apply as far in advance as possible.
Internships are available to both college and high school students. High school students should work through their school’s internship coordinator/counselor to secure county internships. College students requesting an internship should follow the directions on this page.
The preference is given to those college students in which the degree program requires completion of an internship. Although both paid and unpaid internship opportunities are available, the majority of our internships are unpaid. Criminal background and drug screening checks will be required for all internships (not including high school interns.)
Because we provide a variety of services across many different fields of work, internships are managed according to each department’s needs.
For internship opportunities in any of the following departments, please click the “General” tab below and follow the directions, including completion of the County’s internship application: Elections, Emergency Services, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Library, Planning/Parks, Tax, Technology, and Utilities and Engineering.
For internship opportunities in Public Health, Sheriff, or Social Services Departments, please click that department’s tab below and follow directions to be connected with a departmental representative.

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office offers unpaid internships for college students studying Criminal Justice or a related field. Students seeking internships must provide a contract between their respective college and the Sheriff’s Office before beginning the internship.
The Sheriff’s Office also works with Catawba County Schools to offer internships for high school juniors and seniors interested in a career in law enforcement. Students interested in this internship program should contact their school counselors for more information.
