Career Opportunities with Catawba County Sheriff's Office

Deputy Sheriffs must complete BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training). It is offered as a 6-month course at most community colleges; See details below.

It is preferred that candidates for Deputy Sheriff have successfully completed BLET, however, non-certified candidates will be evaluated for possible employment. If a non-certified candidate is chosen, he/she will be hired and paid to attend BLET.

Detention Officers do not have to complete BLET, however, the Detention Officer must successfully complete Detention Officer Certification Course within twelve months of employment.

  • Be at least 21 years of age (20 years old for Detention Officer)
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED)
  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Hold a valid North Carolina driver's license
  • Have a background free from criminal offenses

Deputies start at $46,545.42 annually

Detention Officers start at $42,215.45 annually

The Sheriff's Office also offers extra pay for those who are bi-lingual (pending a testing procedure and budget availability), Education Compensation (i.e. Associates, Bachelors, Masters Degree), Law Enforcement Intermediate Certificate, Advanced Certificate, as well as an Annual Performance salary increase. The Sheriff's Office also offers a $2.00hr night shift differential.

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Sponsorship

When to apply
Sponsorship is provided in accordance with the local school schedules and will be accepted no later than 30 days prior to your BLET school deadline.

Who can apply
In order to be eligible for sponsorship to a BLET program, you must:

  • Be at least 20 years of age (must be 21 to be a Deputy)
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED)
  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Hold a valid North Carolina driver's license
  • Have a background free from criminal offenses
  • Complete an application packet with a local BLET program

BLET Sponsorship Process

In order to apply for BLET sponsorship, an individual may obtain a sponsorship packet from Catawba County Sheriff’s Office by calling 828-465-8321. A letter with our recommendation will be provided to the applicant upon completion of a background investigation. Our agency will not be responsible for any cost incurred during your school.
