The library offers plenty of STEAM programming: STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. Bow, Wow! Recent studies reveal dog-gone grrreat news: Children who read aloud to therapy dogs on a regular basis demonstrate drastic improvement in their reading skills! Animals provide a safe, non-judgmental presence for struggling readers.

The Library Homework Helpers program enriches learning opportunities for students and increases educational attainment in Catawba County by supporting student learning with tutoring and coaching. It also increases teen engagement and supports active learning, personal growth, and leadership for teen volunteers who work with elementary students. The library acts as the facilitator and host, bringing high school student volunteers together with elementary age students who need practice reading and help with their homework. This program is available at the Main Library in Newton.

Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for students in 3rd through 12th grades. Students read books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The library collects books for the program and collaborates with schools for programming.
