Bats
Catawba County Environmental Health does not remove bats from homes. For assistance with bat removal, contact a NC Licensed Wildlife Control Agent.
If you have a bat in your living areas and you are concerned you may have been bit, seek immediate medical assistance and call Catawba County Animal Services at (828) 465-8228.
Bat Pup-Rearing Season
Bat evictions are not permitted during pup-rearing season from May 1 through July 31. Because nine of the state’s 17 bat species are listed as state special concern, threatened, or endangered, bats may not be removed or blocked from attics during this time. The focus instead should be on preventing bats from entering your living areas.
Removing bats and blocking their entry during this time can lead to undesirable consequences such as:
- Adult bats continuing to seek other ways to get to the pups, like through the living space of the house, which can pose a threat to human health.
- Hungry pups wandering to find food, possibly entering the living space or dying inside of walls, also posing a threat to human health.
- Unnecessary death of bat pups.
