Catawba County Budget, Finance Offices Receive Awards
Published: December 20, 2022
Catawba County has received two financial awards from Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), which were recognized during the Catawba County Board of Commissioners’ December 19 meeting.
Catawba County received the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 41st consecutive year. The award, which was presented to the Catawba County Finance Office, recognizes the County’s annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2021. The report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate Catawba County’s financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.
The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
Catawba County was also awarded GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Presented to the Catawba County Budget & Management Office for the 34th consecutive year, the award reflects the commitment of Catawba County and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, Catawba County had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device.
To receive the award, budget documents must be rated "proficient" in all four categories and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.
