MAKING. LIVING. BETTER: Facility Services: Building Maintenance

Briefly describe the area you are spotlighting.
Building Maintenance helps keep County facilities safe, functional, welcoming, and ready to support the employees and public who use them every day. Our purpose is to maintain the buildings, systems, and work environments that allow County departments to provide dependable services to the community.

How do you achieve your mission – what services are offered?
We achieve this mission through preventive maintenance, responsive repairs, inspections, troubleshooting, and coordination with contractors and vendors when specialized work is needed. Services include general building repairs, plumbing, electrical support, HVAC coordination, lighting, doors and locks, ceiling and flooring repairs, painting, furniture relocation and workspace support, emergency response, and work order support for County departments.

Who does this department/service area/program serve?
Building Maintenance primarily serves County departments and employees by supporting the facilities where they work and provide services. The public also benefits when visiting County buildings for services such as public meetings, permits, court-related business, health and human services, library services, elections, or other County functions. In those moments, a clean, safe, and well-maintained building helps create a better experience for everyone.

How and where are services delivered?
Services are delivered on-site at County-owned and County-operated facilities. Work is typically requested through the work order process, phone calls, emails, scheduled inspections, or direct coordination during urgent situations. Examples include repairing a leak before it damages a workspace, restoring heating or cooling comfort, replacing lighting for safety, fixing doors and hardware, preparing spaces for staff moves or events, and responding quickly when a building issue could interrupt public service.

How many staff members are involved in delivering services?
12 staff members are involved in delivering Building Maintenance services. The team works closely with other Facility Services staff, County departments, outside contractors, and vendors to complete work safely and efficiently.

How does our community and/or organization benefit from these services?
The organization benefits because well-maintained facilities help County employees do their jobs safely and effectively. Preventive maintenance helps reduce costly emergency repairs, protects County assets, and extends the life of buildings and equipment. The community benefits when County offices remain open, comfortable, accessible, and ready to serve. For example, timely maintenance can prevent building closures, improve safety in public areas, support energy efficiency, and help create a professional environment for residents and visitors.

Please share anything unique or interesting about this program you would want people to know.
A lot of Building Maintenance work happens behind the scenes, but it affects nearly every County service. The team often has to solve problems quickly, adapt to different types of buildings, and balance daily requests with long-term maintenance needs. No two days are exactly the same - the work can range from a small repair to coordinating a major building system issue in the same day.

Fun fact:
Building Maintenance also plays an important role in helping people navigate the county. Our department is responsible for making street signs for areas of Catawba County outside of city limits. It is a unique behind-the-scenes service that helps support public safety, emergency response, wayfinding, and the daily travel of residents and visitors.

Is there anything you would like to add?
Building Maintenance is proud to support the people who serve Catawba County. Our goal is to be responsive, dependable, and proactive so County facilities remain safe, efficient, and ready for the work happening inside them.
