The Art of Food
Published: August 28, 2018
It’s said that we eat with our eyes as much as we do with our mouths, and it comes as no surprise that engaging all of the senses makes for a more satisfying mealtime experience. In restaurants, chefs take great pains to ensure that plates are visually pleasing and well balanced when they compose a dish.
Although the artistry and effort that go into fine dining are not realistic for most families, the ability to make food more enticing is absolutely within hand. At the library’s upcoming workshop, we’ll discover easy ways to turn food into works of art, no culinary degree or expense account needed.
Being imaginative is of great benefit, along with contemplating how to mimic an object with a food or ingredient that may not be immediately apparent. For example, we’ll witness a cheese plate created in the style of folk art, and we’ll view a sushi roll made up of candy, moving the dish entirely from savory to sweet. We’ll also learn to make cucumber boats and create a sculpture with a cheese ball.
If you’re intrigued, you’ll definitely want to come see things in action. You should also be prepared to do some tasting! After all, replicating an object with food is one thing; ensuring it tastes good is quite another!
The Art of Food workshop takes place Thursday, September 6 at 6 pm at the Main Library in Newton. Please register by calling 828.465.8665.
