Household Hazardous Waste
The County provides one-day collection events to accept residential household hazardous waste (HHW), free of charge. No business waste accepted

Examples of HHW materials accepted at the one-day event: Pesticides, Herbicides, Fertilizers, Brake Fluid, Antifreeze, Gasoline, Kerosene, Motor Oil and Filters, Lacquer, Paint Thinner, Solvents, Degreasers, Cleaners, Pool Chemicals, Fluorescent Bulbs and Tubes, Mercury, Batteries, Electronics and Paint.
These items are NOT accepted: Household Garbage, Tires, Commercial Waste, Ammunition, Explosives, Fire Extinguishers, Medical Waste, Radioactive Materials, Unknown Chemicals and Cylinders.
Computers, TV’s and other Electronics are now accepted year round, free of charge, at the County’s residential electronics recycling area located at the Blackburn Landfill. See below for more information.
Permanent Electronics and Paint Recycling Program
Catawba County offers a residential recycling program that includes a permanent electronics and paint collection area at the Blackburn Landfill in Newton. This service is available year round during regular Landfill operating hours and is offered to the citizens of Catawba County, free of charge. The Blackburn Landfill is located at 4017 Rocky Ford Rd, south of the intersection of Highway 10 and Hickory-Lincolnton Highway. Electronics and Paint is accepted at the Blackburn Landfill on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The Landfill is closed on New Year’s Day, July 4th, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.
No business waste accepted.
Partial list of acceptable electronics: computer monitors, laptops, hard drives, servers, wire, cable, modems, ink/toner cartridges, batteries, cell phones, pagers, answering machines, DVD players, VCR's, radios, stereo equipment, scanners, calculators, fax machines, printers, copiers, microwaves, remote controls and televisions.
Gutted televisions are not accepted.
Electronics Recycling Brochure
All data and data bearing devices on electronic equipment will be destroyed by an R2 certified contracted vendor.
The County cannot guarantee the nondisclosure of any information left on equipment.
Latex and Oil Based Paint is accepted. Spray paint is not accepted. Click on the link for helpful hints about managing and donating your unwanted paint and spray paint.
