Permit Definition Types Catawba County uses a number of permit type designations. Each permit designator contains the same basic elements: permit type, year permit was issued, and permit number. For example, permit number BLD2001-00002 is a Building Permit which was issued in 2001 and was the second Building Permit issued for the year. The first three letters will change depending on the type of permit you're looking for. The first three letters “BLD” tell you what type of permit you're dealing with. In this case, a Building permit. The next four digits “2001” represent the year the permit application was received. The remainder "-00002" is the actual number for that specific permit. There are several Permit types. The following list identifies the types of permits and the department responsible for administering each permit type. In many cases a number of departments may be involved with the review of a permit. If you have a question or concern regarding a specific permit, please contact the department that you believe is most appropriate to answer your questions. If you're not certain which department to contact, then contact the department responsible for administering that permit type.

Permit Abbreviation Description Administered by... BLD Building Permit - Used for additions, alterations and demolition of existing buildings, modular homes, mobile offices as well as new buildings. Building Inspections ELE Electric Permit - Used for electrical work for new construction, additions and alterations to existing systems Building Inspections MEC Mechanical Permit – Used for HVAC Systems, and any Gas appliances or lines. Building Inspections MOH Mobile Home Permit – Used for new setups or change out of residential mobile homes. Building Inspections PLM Plumbing Permit – Used for plumbing for new construction, additions, alterations to existing. Building Inspections SHR Shoreline Permit – Used for all pier construction. Planning & Community Development WLS Well or Septic Tank Permits Environmental Health ZON Zoning Permit - Requests for permits allowing specific land uses in certain zoning districts.
