2016-2017 Theme

Soil and Water - Yours For Life
Catawba County Soil and Water Conservation District encourages students in the county to participate in the annual Education Contests.
FOR ALL ENTRIES: The focus will be on BMPs (Best Management Practices) used to protect the soil. After the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, it was necessary for farmers to implement new techniques so that the land could be preserved and severe drought would not again cause such massive soil erosion. North Carolinian Hugh Hammond Bennett, known as the “Father of Soil Conservation,” helped reform farming practices. Students are invited to explore the following BMPs and include one or two of them in their contest entry: Contour Farming, Stripcropping, Crop Rotation, Cover Crop, No-Till, Terrace, Field Border, Grassed Waterway, Riparian Buffer, Rotational Grazing and Livestock Exclusion Fencing.
Entry Deadline is January 27, 2017!
