Proper care and maintenance of a septic tank can help keep a system working safely and properly for many years.
The subject of septic systems is one that includes a fair amount of folklore and information that isn't accurate. The Catawba County Division of Environmental Health provides here some information on septic tank systems in hopes of dispelling some myths about these systems and explaining how they actually work. Hopefully, this information will help you keep your system working well for many years.
The key to having a septic system that will serve you well over a long period of time is regular maintenance, but it's not difficult maintenance. The Catawba County Division of Environmental Health recommends that septic tank owners have their tank pumped out every three to five years. A licensed septic tank pumper can check the condition of the septic tank and the pipes going into and out of the tank. A frequently heard myth is the idea that someone "never had to have my septic tank pumped before." The Catawba County Environmental Health Division suggests septic tank owners think of having the tank pumped out every three to five years in the same way as they think of changing the oil in a car. It's always wiser to do so before you have to, because the system has stopped working. Click here to read more Septic Tank Owner's Guide
