Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting set for 7 pm on Monday, December 18, 2006 at 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will continue a public hearing on a proposed Unified Development Ordinance until its January 16, 2007 meeting, when it is expected to take action on the proposed ordinance, and hold public hearings on a request to rezone a 1.79 acre tract at 5960 Highway 16 North from C-1 Commercial to C-2 Commercial and on proposed names for un-named streets in the Caldwell and Clines Townships. The Board will also consider an appropriation for a citizen’s alert notification system that would allow the county to contact needed emergency staff and notify effected citizens of emergencies by phone, e-mail, text message, fax, PDA, blackberry, etc. and a fee schedule for municipalities, school systems, hospitals and businesses that wish to use the system; a single financing agreement for both a Voice Over Internet Provider phone system for County offices approved by the Board in November and the purchase of medical equipment for Catawba Valley Medical Center; a supplemental appropriation to the Catawba County School System to complete the Maiden High School project; a request from the State Fire Marshal’s Office to combine the Hickory-Viewmont and Hickory-Fairbrook fire districts into the Hickory Rural Fire Insurance District, which will not change the current response district boundaries or the tax rates for either of the current districts; a Federal Legislative agenda and an update to the Board’s State Legislative Agenda; and tax refund requests.

How to avoid a long wait in line to pay property taxes before they are due on January 5, 2007.
Since real estate and personal property taxes are due on or before January 5, 2007, a large number of taxpayers usually come to the Government Center in Newton during the holiday season to pay tax bills. Catawba County’s governmental audit report for the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2006 shows the County continued to deliver services in a sound fiscal manner.
Paula Hodges, Audit Manager of Martin Starnes & Associates, CPAs, which has contracted to perform the independent audit, told the Catawba County Board of Commissioners that the County is in "good financial condition" at the Board's meeting on December 4. The Catawba County Department of Social Services has opened a satellite office for those wishing to apply for the Food Assistance Program at the Eastern Catawba County Cooperative Christian Ministries at 245 East N Street in Newton, adjacent to the Agricultural Resource Center.
Social Services staff will be at the office to accept applications for Food Assistance every Wednesday from 8:30 am until 11:30 am and from 1:00 pm until 4:30 pm.
The Food Assistance Program is designed to promote the general welfare and safeguard the health and well being of the nation's population by raising the levels of nutrition among low-income households. Anyone may apply for food assistance. Eligibility criteria will be discussed during the interview process.

Catawba County young people who are active in 4-H have represented the county well recently in state, regional and national contests.
Ethan Hefner won first place at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Round-Up, while several Catawba County representatives were part of first place teams and others placed in the top three individually or as part of a team. Click here to read more |
