Catawba County to reopen St. Stephens Park on December 12 as third park in County system
The 9.1-acre park is located at 2247 36th Ave NE, behind Clyde Campbell Elementary School off Kool Park Road at the dead end of 36th Ave NE in Hickory. Amenities include a one-acre dog park, 1/3 mile gravel surfaced walking trail, playground, horseshoe pits, picnic shelter and meeting room. A bird feeding station will also be available for up close viewing of songbirds and hummingbirds. Full story

Catawba County to hold Animal Adopt-athon on Saturday, December 13.
The event will be held at the Animal Shelter, adjacent to and behind the Justice Center off Highway 321 Business in Newton, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Animal Services staff will spotlight animals suitable for adoption, and provide the public with an opportunity to have pets vaccinated for rabies and a chance to learn more about training for dogs. New State law will provide property tax relief for some senior citizens and disabled.
The Catawba County Tax Office is preparing to follow a new State law that will provide property tax relief beginning in 2009 to certain homeowners, based on their income, who are either 65 years of age or older; totally and permanently disabled; or disabled veterans. The Board of Commissioners will also continue its request to the North Carolina General Assembly for an increase in the Homestead Exclusion, which provides property tax relief for senior citizens, to a qualifying annual income limit of $35,000. The Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 15, 2008 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will consider proposed 2009 State and Federal Legislative Agendas, with the Board’s top goal being to seek from the North Carolina General Assembly an increase in the Homestead Exclusion that provides property tax relief for senior citizens to $35,000; goals for the Board of Commissioners for Fiscal Year 2009-2010; and the awarding of a bid for new Permit Center application software that will connect the County and seven of its municipalities to the same permitting software and provide additional enhanced services, when the Board meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 15, 2008, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will also receive a report on the County’s Fiscal Year 2007-08 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report and an independent audit of the County for FY 2007-08; consider creating a new position for the Register of Deeds Office to work with the scanning and indexing of vital records; the approval of a new job classification for the Sheriff’s Office titled Senior Investigator, to assist the County in retaining well trained officers by providing experienced investigators with an opportunity to advance to a more senior role; an agreement with Mental Health Partners to continue providing substance abuse treatment services to persons enrolled in programs of the Criminal Justice Partnership Program; a final settlement of funds, due to Mental Health Partners from Catawba County, as the former County Mental Health Services Department transitions to the role of stand-alone agency as Mental Health Partners; a budget revision to account for funds committed for specific projects for fiscal year 2007-2008 which remained unspent at the end of the fiscal year; the awarding of a contract to work with other area counties to fund a new flyover to update the County’s Geospatial Information System (GIS) and a contract for oblique photography associated with the GIS flyover, which will provide side angle views of each structure seen in the GIS system; the appropriation of funds, in partnership with other area local governments, to create additional staffing at the Western Piedmont Council of Governments to provide counseling and assistance for those facing foreclosure; and an amendment to the Memorandum Of Understanding regarding the County’s Rural Planning Organization that addresses attendance at Organization meetings. Catawba County Budget Manager honored for career, mentoring, with top State award
Catawba County Budget Manager Judy Ikerd has been recognized by colleagues from across North Carolina for her outstanding career in governmental budget and evaluation, and especially for her work to assist peers and to mentor rising professionals in her field. Ikerd was named winner of the Jack Vogt Award for Outstanding Commitment to the Advancement of Local Government Budget and Evaluation from the North Carolina Local Government Budget Association. Catawba County names three new department heads
Karen Haines will begin serving as Human Resources Director effective December 29. Mark Logan will begin work as Tax Administrator on January 1, and Jennifer Mace will begin her new duties as Budget Manager on January 1. The three have a collective 36 years of service to the County. Full story |
Catawba County helps say "welcome home" to Vietnam veterans
The Combat Veterans Support Group of Catawba County hosted a “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans” celebration on November 15. The event, at the Catawba Valley Community College Multipurpose Facility, was attended by more than 500 veterans and their spouses.
“This event was held to give a proper welcome home to the Vietnam Veterans of Catawba County, who were never officially welcomed home,” said Cindy S. Travis, Catawba County’s Veterans Services Officer, who was one of many who helped organize the event and was herself honored by the Support Group. Full story
