Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting set for 9:30 am on Monday, November 6, 2006 at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on a proposed application for a 2006-2007 Community Transportation Program Grant; and consider authorizing the purchase of twelve new vehicles for the Sheriff’s Office, in a joint purchase with five other local governments in North Carolina that County staff believes will result in a cost savings. NOTE: The Board will also hold the second of three work sessions to study, in-depth, issues of concern raised by citizens regarding the proposed Unified Development Ordinance on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 11 am in the Second Floor Meeting Room of the Government Center in Newton (Highway 321 Business at intersection with Radio Station Road). Household Hazardous Waste Collection scheduled for Saturday, November 4, 2006 at LP Frans Stadium in Hickory.
Remember you can safely and properly dispose of household hazardous wastes such as pesticides, paint products, cleansers or old motor oil, and unused or broken electronics items like cell phones and computers, at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection event on Saturday, November 4, from 9 am until 3 pm at LP Frans Stadium in Hickory. Record-breaking employee, who has been working for Catawba County since 1944, is named the County's 2006 Employee of the Year.
Lucille Pitts, who has faithfully worked in the Catawba County Register of Deeds Office for over 62 years, has been named Catawba County's Employee of the Year for 2006. Her kindness, professionalism and devotion to service to our citizens was cited often by the other eight staff members in the Register of Deeds Office, who nominated her for the honor. "Drive-through" flu shot clinic to be offered by the Catawba County Public Health Department at Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds, on Highway 70 east of Hickory, on Saturday, November 11 from 7 am to 3 p.m.
The drive-through clinic is one of three methods citizens may choose if they wish to get a flu shot this year. Flu shots will also be available, by appointment only, at the Health Department at 3070 11th Avenue Dr. SE in Hickory (behind Catawba Valley Medical Center) beginning on Monday, November 13. Catawba County Public Health also will join with Catawba Valley Medical Center to hold two flu shot clinics at the Health First Clinic on the lower level at Valley Hill Mall, next to Belk, on the mornings of November 15 & 29. Novelist and screenwriter (and former Charlotte television news anchorman) Bob Inman will read from his latest book, The Christmas Bus, at the Main Branch of the Catawba County Library in Newton, at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, November 14th
Bob Inman remains a popular speaker at literary events throughout the Southeast and is remembered by many as a long-time news anchor on WBTV Channel 3 in Charlotte. He is the author of a collection of essays and four novels: Dairy Queen Days, Captain Saturday, Old Dogs and Children and Home Fires Burning, which was adapted into a Hallmark Hall of Fame TV production.
