The Catawba County Board of Commissioners has indicated revenues from the sales tax, if approved by voters, would be used to avoid a 3.6 cent property tax increase over the next three years to address economic development and public safety needs. The Board will ask Catawba County's delegation to the North Carolina General Assembly to increase the Homestead Exemption, to provide additional property tax relief for seniors living on a fixed income. The Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting is set for 9:30 am on Monday, November 5, 2007 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.
The Board of Commissioners will consider accepting a $127,800 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice for equipment and connections for internal and external video surveillance of schools; and the appropriation of the Catawba Rescue Squad’s existing fund balance for a six bay addition to the squad’s base, when the Board meets at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, November 5, 2007, in the Robert E. Hibbitts Meeting Room of the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will also consider a change in a cost avoidance budget outcome for the Department of Social Services due to an increase in the nursing home costs that are avoided through services provided by Social Services; whether to give the County Tax Assessor the authority, on an individual basis, to grant extensions for listing of personal property, with no extensions to be granted beyond April 15, 2008; two tax refund requests; and a proposed meeting schedule for the Board for 2008. The Board will also recognize graduates of the County’s mini-course on county government and issue proclamations for Adoption Awareness Month and American Education Week. Full agenda

Applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program will be taken from November 5th through November 16th.
The program provides a one-time payment in early February to help eligible, low-income households with heating costs. Households must apply each year during the application period in order to qualify. Full story |
