Early voting ends with special Saturday hours on November 1 at Hickory, Newton sites
Early voting sites at the Main Catawba County Library in Newton and the Highland Recreation Center in Hickory will be open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on November 1. The other two early voting sites, at the Mountain View Branch Library and Sherrills Ford Rescue Base on Slanting Bridge Road, will close for the 2008 election at 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively, on Friday, October 31. Registration for Low-Income Energy Assistance Program begins November 3.
The program provides a one-time payment in early February to help eligible households (based on income) with their heating costs. Full story |

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2008 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will consider revising the County’s Solid Waste Fee Schedule to accept lumber less than 8 feet in length and clean, uncontaminated pallets free of charge, and increase prices for mulch and compost to more accurately reflect market prices; and will welcome John Eller, the County’s new Social Services Director, when the Board meets at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2008, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will also adopt a 2009 meeting schedule; consider designating Emergency Services Director David Weldon and Assistant Planning Director Mary George as agents for a Natural Hazard Mitigation Planning Grant, recognize fifteen employees who have completed the County’s Employee Mini Course and issue proclamations declaring November as Adoption Awareness Month, Home Healthcare Month and National Hospice/Palliative Care Month; November 18, 2008 as “Walk in My Shoes Day” in all public schools in the county; and the week of November 20-27, 2008 as Farm-City Week.
