Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting set for 7 pm on Monday, October 16, 2006 at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.

The Catawba County Board of CommissionersThe Catawba County Board of Commissioners will consider a proposed Work First Plan for fiscal years 2007 through 2009 and an amendment to the County Code regarding ambulance franchises, to specify that the Catawba County EMS has been declared a "Model EMS System" by the State of North Carolina and require any party interested in providing ambulance service in Catawba County to meet the same high standards in place for a Model EMS System.  The Board will also hear a presentation on economic development opportunities available that could result if the county works to attract data centers to the area, and consider an updated Memorandum of Understanding between Catawba County Government and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension. Early voting begins at two locations in Catawba County on October 19; voter registration for the November 7 election ends at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 13. 

Remember to register by October 13 and vote on November 7Early voting for the election to be held on November 7, 2006 will begin on Thursday, October 19th and end on Saturday, November 4th.  Early voting will be conducted at two locations: the Catawba County Library at 115 West ‘C’ St. in Newton and the Highland Recreation Center at 1515 12th St Dr NW, Hickory. The hours for early voting will be from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Saturday, November, 4, 2006, early voting will be offered from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Curbside voting will be available for anyone who needs it. Click here to read more

Second Household Hazardous Waste Collection for 2006 scheduled for Saturday, November 4, 2006 at LP Frans Stadum in Hickory.

Dispose of Household Hazardous Wastes properly on November 4 at Frans Stadium in Hickory.Do you have any household hazardous wastes such as pesticides, paint products, cleansers or old motor oil you need to throw away? How about old electronics like cell phones and computers? Combine Halloween fun for children (through sixth grade) with an opportunity to help less fortunate children get the medical care they can't afford or aren't eligible for at the annual KIN Fall Fest and Trick or Treat Safely event at the Catawba County Health Department on October 30.

How about something that also benefits a good cause, raising money for the Kids In Need Fund that helps children get the medical care they can't afford or aren't eligible for! Beat those pre-testing jitters!  A new computer program is available at the Catawba County Library that's designed to prepare someone to take a variety of tests.  Learn more at a free class on Thursday, October 19 at 10 am at the Main Library in Newton. 

Enjoy Halloween fun and help a good cause at the KIN Fall Fest!The Learning Express is designed to prepare individuals for a host of exams including GRE, ACT, SAT, GED and GMAT plus TOEFL, ESL and US Citizenship tests. Professional and certification exams are also covered, such as Civil Service, real estate, cosmetology, firefighter, EMT/paramedic, postal worker and teacher certification. Learning Express is one of several computer classes offered this month by the Catawba County Library System. Farm Fresh regional tour is October 14, 2006.One of the best signals that the fall harvest season has arrived is a crisp, locally grown apple or freshly pressed cup of cider. For consumers in the Charlotte region, the options for locally grown food have been boosted by the launch of Foothills Fresh. North Carolina Cooperative Extension in Catawba, Cleveland, Lincoln and Gaston counties is instrumental in this local food initiative, helping small farmers in the four-county area market their fresh produce, farm products and agricultural tourism.
