The two-day course on the programs and structure of the county government will be held during the morning and afternoons of October 27 and 29 at the new Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue Base on Slanting Bridge Road.  Registration ends on October 9.  Full story

Cooperative Extension Director looks back on successful career as he retires.

Fred Miller was instrumental in the opening of an Agricultural Resource Center for the county; helped create one of the first and most successful teams of “area agents” in North Carolina; created a new agent position focused on the environment; and served as president of the national association for professionals in his field.  Full story

Catawba County to celebrate tenth anniversary of founding of its park system with special events on Saturdays, October 10, 17 and 24!

Parks Staff are busy finalizing plans to celebrate with a series of fun-filled and educational days at each of the three parks in the County system, including the grand opening at St. Stephens Park on October 10, a 10th anniversary celebration at Riverbend Park on October 17 and special events at Baker's Mountain Park on October 24, 2009.  Full story

The survey of the county’s seniors, and professionals working with seniors, is designed to gather information on the qualities of life for seniors in the county and promote the creation of an even better community for seniors. The Catawba County Board of CommissionersThe Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 5, 2009 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.

The Board will consider appropriating funds for improvements to the system that collects methane gas, produced naturally at the Blackburn Landfill, and converts it into electricity; a resolution opposing the possible consolidation, by the US Postal Service, of some mail processing to Greensboro which would result in job losses in the Hickory metropolitan area; and acceptance of a grant from the Carolina Thread Trail, which would be used to create the County’s master greenway plan for its portion of the Trail, a planned network of greenways, trails and blueways in a fifteen county region of North and South Carolina.

The Board will also present a report to the public on the status of its goals for fiscal year 2008-2009; and consider revising the County’s Solid Waste Management Fee Schedule to account for a new State law, effective October 1, 2009, that bans used motor oil filters, plastic bottles and wood pallets from landfills in the state; proposed reductions to the Catawba County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council budget in response to mandated State budget cuts; the acceptance of a Help America Vote Act Grant for required signage to help make polling places accessible for persons with disabilities; and the delegation of authority to the County Tax Administrator to allow, on an individual basis, extensions for listing of personal property beyond the State’s deadline of January 5, 2010 upon written request and for good cause shown. The Board will also receive a report from the County Tax Collector on the settlement of taxes for fiscal year 2008-2009, and issue a proclamation declaring the week of October 4 as Fire Prevention Week in Catawba County.   See agenda

Customers give County Library system thumbs up

Customers are pleased with the Catawba County Library System, according to a customer service survey conducted earlier this year.  Results from the annual poll show that virtually all of the 569 patrons who took the survey rated the library service as good or excellent. The high marks reflect an ongoing perception of the County Library system, as evidenced in surveys for 17 years.  Full story

Bethany Church Road Convenience Center to return to operating schedule used prior to March 2009

The Bethany Church Road Convenience Center, part of Catawba County’s network of convenience centers where citizens may bring solid waste for proper disposal, will soon restore operating hours that were in place prior to March 2009. Effective October 31, 2009, the Bethany Church Road center will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and will again be closed on Sundays.  Full story

Catawba County Public Health has begun offering vaccinations for seasonal flu.

Because the vaccine for the H1N1 flu (also known as "swine flu) is not expected to be available until mid-October and demand for it is expected to be heavy, vaccines for other seasonal varieties of the flu are being given first.  Flu Information Center   Full story
