Catawba County Public Health has begun offering vaccinations for seasonal flu.

Because the vaccine for the H1N1 flu (also known as "swine flu) is not expected to be available until October and demand for it is expected to be heavy, vaccines for other seasonal varieties of the flu are being given first.  Flu Information Center   Full story

The two-day course on the programs and structure of the county government will be held during the morning and afternoons of October 27 and 29 at the new Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue Base on Slanting Bridge Road.  Registration ends on October 9.  Full story

Catawba County makes clean up of parks, roadsides and common areas easier during Fall Litter Sweep.

Catawba County citizens, businesses, local governments, civic groups and Adopt-A-Highway volunteers are encouraged to participate in helping to make the county clean, green and beautiful during the Fall 2009 Litter Sweep, from September 19 through October 3. Litter Sweep promotes litter clean up in public areas, highways, lakes, streams, parks and neighborhoods.  Full story

Share your ideas on ways to make Catawba County an even better community for children and families at upcoming Children's Summit. 

A planning committee is developing a consolidated Children’s Agenda, which will include recommendations to address issues impacting children and their families in our county. The committee wants to hear from citizens about what should be included in this agenda, at meetings on October 6 at Northview Middle School in Hickory and October 13 at Maiden High School.  Full story

Catawba County Animal Services to mark World Rabies Day on Monday, September 28 with free rabies vaccinations and an Animal Adopt-A-Thon.

Catawba County’s Animal Services staff is making plans to get fully into the spirit of World Rabies Day, a day dedicated to working to make rabies history, on Monday, September 28, 2009. Animal Services will hold an Animal Adopt-A-Thon from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on September 28, including free rabies vaccinations between 11 a.m. and 12 Noon.  Full story

Community Alert System logo Catawba County continued tests of enhanced Community Alert System.

Catawba County residents may have received a phone call during weeks of September 7th or 14th, 2009 as Emergency Services officials tested the performance of a new emergency communications system the County began using earlier this year. Over 40,000 phone numbers were called. Full story

The Catawba County Board of CommissionersCatawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting set for 7 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2009, at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.

The Board will hold public hearings on 1) a request to rezone 10.83 acres at 9310 Highway 10 West, in the Plateau Small Area Planning District, from R-40 Residential to HC-CD Highway Commercial-Conditional District; 2) a proposed application for a 2009 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Infrastructure Water Grant that would be used to bring water lines to nineteen homes owned by low to moderate income homeowners on Royal Heights Circle near Advent Crossroads; 3) the close out of the County’s 2006 CDBG Unifour First Time Homebuyer Program; and 4) a proposed application to participate in the 2009 CDBG Unifour First Time Homebuyer Program.

The Board will also consider a request from the Catawba County Board of Health to add two additional Home Health nursing positions, to address a recent 21% increase in demand for home health services; the awarding of a bid for the County’s banking services, over the next two years, to Branch Banking and Trust (BB&T), the apparent lowest bidder meeting all of the County’s qualifications; and a request to waive the normally charged solid waste tipping fees for two 40-cubic yard waste containers for the Lake Hickory and Lake Lookout Protective Association’s participation in the Big Sweep clean up in October 2009. The Board will also present a Distinguished Public Service Award to Telecommunicator Alena Greer, who was recently named the 2009 Telecommunicator of the Year by the North Carolina Chapter of the National Emergency Number Association.  Full agenda
