Catawba County launches program to support and encourage business and commercial recycling.

The Commercial Recycling and Waste Reduction Partnership program is a free and voluntary program designed to encourage local businesses to take proactive steps to improve their environmental record, while also improving their bottom-line. It recognizes businesses in Catawba County that operate in an environmentally friendly manner by practicing the “four Rs” (reduce, reuse, recycle, rebuy).  Full story

Children entering kindergarten must be up-to-date on a set of immunizations while other immunizations are required for those entering sixth grade. The State of North Carolina requires that students have an up-to-date immunization record on file at their school.  Full story

The Catawba County Board of CommissionersThe Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting is set for

9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 N. College Avenue in Newton.


The Board will consider awarding a bid for construction of the planned Blackburn-Plateau Water Loop, which will provide water service to the new Apple Inc. data center and other businesses in that area and a backup water supply for the Town of Maiden and the Southeast Catawba County Water System; and will also consider the purchase of fifteen additional cardiac monitor and defibrillator units to allow Emergency Services to better treat cardiac patients. Please note the change in the Board’s normal meeting schedule, as the first Monday in September is Labor Day.

The Board will also consider entering into Revenue Sharing Agreements with the City of Conover regarding the running of water lines on Remington Drive that will provide municipal quality water to residents who have dry wells and significant difficulty in digging new wells, and for water lines on Leeland Terrace, where multiple wells have gone dry; the acceptance of a grant from the North Carolina Governor’s Crime Commission that will allow the Sheriff’s Office to add an additional deputy to its Domestic Violence Unit, and a tax refund request. NCACC seal created entirely with recycled trashCatawba County hosts very successful North Carolina Association of County Commissioners Annual Conference. 

Over 200 county commissioners from across the state spent more than two days in the county.  The conference included an address by North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue; an appearance by Catawba County native Jon Reep, the comedian who was the national winner of season five of the television show, “Last Comic Standing”, and a focus on Catawba County’s national leadership in “green” programs and initiatives.  Check out photos from the conference on our Flickr site!
