The Catawba County Board of CommissionersThe Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting is set for

7 p.m. on Monday, August 20, 2007 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will hold public hearings on 1) a request to rezone two parcels totaling 5.31 acres, located at 7804 and 7826 Highway 150 East, from R-20 Residential to HC Highway Commercial; and 2) a request to rezone a 0.5 acre portion of a 3.07 acre parcel, located at 2678 East Maiden Road, from R-40 Residential to Rural Commercial-Conditional District, when the Board meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 20, 2007, in the Robert E. Hibbitts Meeting Room of the 1924 Courthouse in Newton.

The Board will also consider requests from the cities of Hickory and Newton, the towns of Catawba and Maiden, and the County’s Planning staff to amend the current list of Map Review Officers and receive a report on the use of Alcoholic Beverage Control revenues to provide substance abuse treatment services. The new debit cards and direct deposit will replace paper checks that were issued in the past. Debit cards will mean child support funds are received much more quickly, easily and safely. Child Support recipients will be able to use the debit cards at ATMs and retailers, similar to a regular debit card. Full story

Photo of a food inspectorCatawba County Public Health helps insure potentially tainted food products were safely removed from shelves.

Teams visited grocery stores, family child care homes, drug stores, gas stations, churches and any place with a food pantry in Catawba County to determine if potentially contaminated foods produced by Castleberry's Food Company were present, and advise and assist in the safe removal of those products.  Full story

Three seats are open on the Hickory Public Schools Board of Education, while four seats are open on the Newton-Conover City Schools Boards of Education.  Full story
