Catawba County begins oil filter recycling program as State ban on filters in landfills approaches.

Motor oil filters in landfills could contaminate ground water, so the State is banning oil filters from landfills. This means no one may dispose of oil filters in their regular trash after October 1, 2009. Used oil filters are now accepted at most Convenience Centers across the county. Full story

Catawba County begins sending out information on traffic incident locations via Twitter

Catawba County has launched a feed from its 911 Center of the information on calls regarding traffic incidents. The feed shows the type of incident reported, such as a vehicle accident, stranded motorist or vehicle fire, and gives the location of the incident. Only traffic related incidents are reported through this feed. Full story

Catawba County Animal Services schedules additional rabies vaccination clinics.

The next clinic will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the Catawba Fire Department, at 108 North Main Street in Catawba from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and more clinics are planned into Fall 2009.  Animal Services is also providing one year rabies vaccinations to pet owners year round, by appointment. Also: Animals Services receives grant from Petfinder.com to provide kennel cough vaccinations for all dogs and puppies coming into the shelter for one year.  Full story

Winners named in Voluntary Agricultural District Poster Contest.

Three Catawba County young people were recently named winners of the Voluntary Agricultural District Poster Contest. First prize went to Alex Malyszko of Terrell. Aaron Morrison, who lives northeast of Hickory, won the second place prize and Emma Roseman, who resides south of Hickory, won third place.  Full story

The Catawba County Board of CommissionersThe Catawba County Board of Commissioners' next meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 3, 2009 at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC

The Board will hold a public hearing on a proposed application to the North Carolina Department of Transportation for a fiscal year 2009-2010 Rural Operating Assistance Program Grant, which would be used to provide public transportation for the residents of Catawba County; and consider approving a request from the three public school systems in the county to apply for the use of Qualified School Construction Bonds, available as part of Federal "stimulus" legislation, for future school construction and a request for the abandonment of a portion of State Road 1902 (Harvel Road); and present a National Association of Counties Achievement Award to staff of Social Services’ Child Protective Services division.  Full agenda

Local history talks planned at County Library.

The Balls Creek Campground and Soldiers Reunion will be topics of two local history talks next month at the Catawba County Library at 115 West C Street in Newton.  The Balls Creek talk will be begin at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4.  Soldiers Reunion will be the topic at 5:30 p.m. on August 11.  Both programs are free and open to the public.  Full story
