Photo of childrenThe Catawba County Department of Social Services reminds everyone to protect children from hot vehicles during the summer months.

From 2002-2006, 941 fatalities occurred across the U.S. as a result of children being left unattended in or around motor vehicles. Even on a mild day with temperatures in the 70s, the interior of a car can quickly reach temperatures that can result in heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which can cause permanent disability or death. Catawba County Library logoHours at the Conover Branch of the County Library have expanded! 

As of July 1, 2007, the branch is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from noon to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays.  Sunday hours remain from 2-6 p.m. The facility is closed on Fridays, Saturdays and County holidays.  Full story

Community Alert System logoTell your friends and neighbors they should sign up to be informed of emergencies by phone, e-mail or text message!

Catawba County Government is finalizing installation of a Community Alert System (CAS) that will be used to inform citizens about emergencies, by phone, e-mail and/or text messages. Full story  Sign up for the alert system

The Catawba County Communications Center reminds you that 9-1-1 should be used only in the case of an actual emergency.  Do not call 9-1-1:

  • if your power goes out.  Call 1-800-POWER-ON (800-769-3766)
  • if you just need a phone number.  Call directory assistance at 411
  • if you just want to test your phone line.

Please save 9-1-1 for a real emergency.   In a non-emergency situation, you may contact the Communications Center at 828-464-3112
