The Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting is set for 7 pm on Monday, July 9, 2007 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will hold public hearings on 1) a proposed application to the North Carolina Department of Transportation for a Rural Operating Assistance Program Grant; and 2) a new set of flood zone maps for Catawba County issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, when the Board meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2007, in the Robert E. Hibbitts Meeting Room of the 1924 Courthouse in Newton.
The Board will also consider accepting a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to help meet some of the costs associated with housing potential undocumented criminal aliens in local jail facilities; consider declaring certain library materials as surplus for sale by the Newton Friends of the Library to raise funds for the library; the donation of surplus vehicles for the Work and Ride Program of the Department of Social Services, and a bid for a County-owned house located at 215 South Bost Avenue in Newton, NC (but not including the land at this parcel). | Catawba County has dedicated a Public Safety Officers Memorial
The memorial honors those who gave their lives in the line of duty in law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical service and rescue. The memorial is located on the grassy strip that supports the flags and flagpoles in front of the Catawba County Justice Center in Newton. Catawba is the first county in North Carolina to dedicate a memorial that honors the memory of those who gave their lives in all four major branches of public safety work. Full story

The Children's Advocacy Center of Catawba County has won the 2007 Champions of Children Award
The award, presented by the Catawba County Partnership For Children, recognizes efforts to improve the lives of young children and their families through collaboration, advocacy, and resourcefulness.
The Children's Advocacy Center is a cooperative effort among local agencies that deal with the social, emotional, legal and medical issues of child abuse. Full story
