Catawba County has had well rules in effect since 2001, so the Environmental Health Division is well positioned to assume the responsibilities required under the new rules. There should be little change for well contractors who have worked in Catawba County since 2001.  Full story

Photo of a temporary food establishment at a fairNew State rules also established permit fees for Temporary Food Establishments for fairs, festivals and similar events, as of July 1, 2008

On July 1st, Catawba County Public Health and other health departments in North Carolina began collecting permit fees from vendors who are issued temporary food establishment permits at fairs, festivals, carnivals, and similar gatherings. The fee will be $50. Permits will be in effect for the length of the fair, festival or other event, up to 15 days. Vendors were previously required to obtain permits, but charged no fee.  Full story

The Catawba County Board of CommissionersThe Catawba County Board of Commissioners' next meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2008 at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will consider appropriating funds 1) to complete renovations to Hickory High School, 2) for replacement of the chiller at the Government Center, and 3) for improvements to the heating and air conditioning systems at the County’s Animal Shelter mandated by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, when the Board meets at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2008, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.

The Board will also consider authorizing the donation of a truck, no longer needed by the County, to the Catawba County School System and the waiving of building inspection permit fees for the 2008 Greater Hickory Classic, which generates substantial revenue for the local economy. The Board will also present two National Association of Counties Achievement Awards, won by the Department of Social Services’ Expedited Paternity Testing Program and the Regional EcoComplex. The Catawba County EcoComplex, which is turning the Blackburn Landfill into a resource recovery and “green” research facility, and a program that expedited the process of moving child welfare cases through the court system, have been named winners of 2008 National Association of Counties Achievement Awards.  Full story

Two veteran Catawba County departmental leaders will retire on November 1.

Catawba County Social Services Director Bobby BoydSocial Services Director Bobby K. Boyd has been recognized on the local, state and national level as a visionary in the field of Social Work. Since 2000, he has steered the agency through a time when a dramatic economic downturn has brought about an increased need for the services the agency provides. In the wake of the loss of over 10,000 jobs in the county, food assistance caseloads rose 240% and Medicaid cases rose 122%.  Full story

Personnel Director Debbie BradleyPersonnel Director Debbie Bradley is being recognized and thanked for leading an effort to make the County’s Personnel Office more customer service oriented, playing an important role in helping the entire County government in a renewed emphasis in customer service, creating new programs to promote a healthier workforce, and using new technologies over her tenure so that the Personnel Office works more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly way.  Full story                                                                                 Debbie Bradley

Outgoing Board of Social Services Chair Anne WepnerCatawba County Board of Social Services recognizes outgoing chairperson

On June 17, Anne Abernathy Wepner, Chair of the Catawba County Board of Social Services, presided over her last meeting. She served two consecutive 3-year terms, the maximum amount of time an individual can serve, and was Chair since July 2003.  Full story

The third scholarship winner, Alescia Caldwell, was unable to attend the event.Three young people who received foster care have been awarded Gretchen Peed Scholarships.

Statistics show only 7 – 13% of students who received foster care enroll in higher education. The Catawba County Board of Social Services recently had the privilege of congratulating three young people who are beating this statistic as recipients of scholarships from the Gretchen Peed Scholarship Fund. John Mallett, 2008 valedictorian of the Newton-Conover Health Science High School has been accepted to Brigham Young University and will receive $500 toward his tuition. Alescia Caldwell will receive $500 and has been accepted at Pensacola Christian College. Kellie Auton will receive $250 and will be attending Western Piedmont Community College.  Full story
