Catawba County offices will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2009, in observance of the July 4th holiday.

Just as you look for a restaurant’s sanitation grade, you should look for a temporary food stand’s permit before ordering. Temporary food establishments are required to be inspected and permitted prior to serving the public. Full story

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners traditionally does not meet on the first Monday in July.

The Board's only regular meeting for July will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2009 in the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.

The County recently began using Flickr, an online photo management and sharing application. Photos will be placed on the County's website. Catawba County, at its sole discretion, has the right to determine which photos submitted are appropriate for publication.  Full story

Catawba County Department of Emergency Services to bolster fire prevention efforts through grant.

The Catawba County Department of Emergency Services' Fire and Rescue Division recently received a $1000 fire prevention grant from FM Global, a property insurer of the world’s largest businesses based in Johnston, Rhode Island. The award will be used to help fire investigators more efficiently investigate and determine the cause of a fire.  Full story

The next clinic will be held at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds on Highway 70 east of Hickory. Animal Services is also providing one year rabies vaccinations to pet owners year round, by appointment. Full story

Green books "growing" at the Catawba County Library

A host of “green” nonfiction books have been recently added to the Catawba County Library System. Ranging from political commentaries to how-to’s, the new acquisitions are bound to get you thinking green.  The libraries have offered environmental books for many years, but the latest titles were purchased in response to growing trends toward recycling, conserving and protecting the world around us.  Full story
