Publicly funded higher education opportunities in Catawba County will be focus of a May 19 "drop in" information session at St. Stephens Elementary School.
Citizens from across Catawba County are invited to drop by at their convenience, between 5 and 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 19, in the cafeteria at St. Stephens Elementary School at 684 30th Street NE, northwest of Conover, to talk individually with representatives of Catawba Valley Community College, the Hickory Metro Higher Education Center, and the Center for Engineering Technology. No formal program is planned from 5 until 6:30. County officials and members of the Board of Commissioners will also be there to talk individually with citizens about a variety of services to northwest Catawba County, including plans to reopen the St. Stephens Park. The Catawba County Board of Commissioners' next meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2008 at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will consider amending the County’s Animal Ordinance to make it easier to read, clarify complaint procedures, refine dangerous and vicious dog definitions, and consolidate sections previously scattered throughout the ordinance, and consider the proposed Annual Plan for the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council for fiscal year 2008-2009, when the Board meets at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2008, in the Robert E. Hibbitts Meeting Room of the 1924 Courthouse, at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will consider requests from the Newton-Conover City Schools for appropriation of funds for an activity bus and the purchase of warehouse space; appropriation of lottery funds for renovations to the system’s administration building for use by the Health Science High School; and a letter of commitment to fund $322,000 in the County’s fiscal year 2008-09 budget for new bleachers, new flooring and lighting in the Newton-Conover High School gym; a request from Jenkins Elementary School to transfer funds remaining in a completed project to construct fencing and a retaining wall at that school; and will issue proclamations designating Foster Care Month, Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, Emergency Medical Services Week, National Police Week and Public Service Recognition Week, and present the County’s Finance Department with a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the U.S. and Canada. Your next opportunity to properly dispose of household hazardous waste will be on Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Government Center in Newton.
Catawba County will hold its spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, May 3, 2008 in the parking lot of the Government Center off Highway 321 Business in Newton. A wide variety of household products and used electronic equipment will be accepted for proper disposal. Full story |
| Catawba County Animal Shelter to expand hours of operation beginning May 28.
The shelter will be open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., to give more citizens convenient times to visit the shelter and consider adopting animals. Full story |

Catawba County Home Health ranked in top 25% of all home care agencies in United States
The Catawba County Home Health Agency has been awarded accreditation status by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care, Inc., for the services of in-home skilled nursing care, physical therapy, occupation therapy, speech therapy, medical social worker, and home health aides. A division of Catawba County Public Health, the agency has provided quality services to the community for 35 years. Full story |
Catawba County Family NET earns three year accreditation
The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities International (CARF) has accredited Catawba County Social Services for a period of three years for its Family NET, Residential, Therapeutic Foster Care and Day Treatment programs. This is the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to CARF standards. Full story
