Catawba County Public Health is working with state and federal agencies to monitor Swine Flu outbreak.
Contact has been made with local hospitals, schools, and community partners in order to share information about the recent outbreak. Public Health is participating in conference calls with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Public Health and reviewing websites, such as the site maintained by the Centers for Disease Control, for updates. Catawba County Emergency Services has participated in the conference calls and worked collaboratively with Public Health and North Carolina Emergency Management to prepare to respond if necessary. Dispose of household hazardous waste properly on Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Government Center in Newton.
Catawba County will hold its spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, May 2, 2009, in the parking lot of the Government Center off Highway 321 Business in Newton. A wide variety of household products and used electronic equipment will be accepted for proper disposal. Full story |
Catawba County Animal Services to continue rabies vaccination clinics on May 9.
The next clinic will be held at the Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue Base at 4011 Slanting Bridge Road. Animal Services is also providing one year rabies vaccinations to pet owners year round, by appointment. Full story |
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners' next meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 2009, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will receive an update on Catawba County Public Health’s monitoring of the current swine flu outbreak with cases being reported, as of April 29, 2009, in other parts of the state, other states and around the world; and consider an increase of $94,700 to the Home Health budget to fund a significant increase in home health service demands, which are funded by program revenues as no County funds are included in the Home Health budget.
The Board will also issue a proclamation recognizing May 17-23, 2009 as Emergency Medical Services Week and recognize the County’s Finance Department, which has received the Government Finance Officers Association’s Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 27th consecutive year. Public meetings to be held on Lake Norman region bike plan.
Public drop-ins are scheduled for May 11, 12 and 19 (7 p.m.), in Denver, Davidson and Mooresville. The region is exploring ways to create a safe and lasting bicycle network. You're invited to come and contribute your thoughts and ideas. Full story |
Attendance at Catawba County parks sets all-time record.
The number of people enjoying the outdoors at Catawba County Parks is at an all time high. Traffic estimates show that, as of April 18, more people used the parks during this fiscal year, which won’t end until June 30th, than used the parks during all of fiscal year 2007-2008. Full story |
Catawba County Animal Shelter's public hours will change beginning May 1, 2009.
The shelter will be open to the public from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with Saturday public hours to expand to 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The change follows a six month study of visiting patterns at the shelter and will allow staff additional time to keep the shelter clean, and to examine and treat animals. The change is expected to create a healthier environment for the animals, staff and public. Full story

The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting is presented to governments that prepare and publish an "easily readable, understandable, comprehensive annual financial report." Full story |
