Photo of a meetingCatawba County's EcoComplex and economic development will be the focus of an April 21 "drop in" information session at Jacobs Fork Middle School.

Citizens from across Catawba County are invited to drop by at their convenience, between 5 and 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 21 in the cafeteria at Jacobs Fork Middle School, at 3431 Plateau Road just south of the intersection of Highway 127 South and Highway 10, to talk individually with County officials and members of the Board of Commissioners about these and other issues including parks, library service and the work of the Sheriff's Office. The Board of Commissioners will follow the information session by holding a regular meeting in the school cafeteria, beginning at 7 p.m.  Read more about the April 21 community event!

The Catawba County Board of CommissionersThe Catawba County Board of Commissioners' next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2008 in the cafeteria of Jacobs Fork Middle School, at 3431 Plateau Road (behind Fred T. Foard High School).

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on a request to rezone a 3.74 acre parcel, at 7780 Highway 150 East in the Sherrills Ford Small Area Planning District, from R-20 Residential to HC-Highway Commercial; receive an update on the County’s EcoComplex; consider an agreement that would create a Western Piedmont Regional Transit Authority; and the acceptance of a $133,800 federal grant to assist the homeless and those at risk of losing their homes, when the Board meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2008, at Jacobs Fork Middle School at 3431 Plateau Road, beside and just beyond Fred T. Foard High School.

The Board will also consider amending the County Employment Policy Against Unlawful Workplace Harassment; new job classifications for the Emergency Services Department that would reconfigure the current staff duties but would not increase the workforce; and a Local Business Plan for Mental Health Partners, the new agency that would be created by the merger of Burke County and Catawba County Mental Health Services, effective July 1, 2008. Catawba County's next Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is Saturday, May 5, 2007Your next opportunity to properly dispose of household hazardous waste will be on Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Government Center in Newton.

Catawba County will hold its spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, May 3, 2008 in the parking lot of the Government Center off Highway 321 Business in Newton.  A wide variety of household products and used electronic equipment will be accepted for proper disposal.  Full story

Photo of dog Catawba County Animal Care and Control continues April rabies vaccination clinics.

In an effort to offer clinics at convenient times, the Catawba County Animal Care and Control Office will hold one Saturday clinic, on April 26, from 10 a.m. until 12 Noon at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds. Other clinics will be held at various locations across the county beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through April 23. Vaccinations will cost $7 each again this year.  Full story

The City of Hickory has modified water restrictions to allow the watering of lawns once a week and washing of cars twice a month, for water users in Hickory, Conover, Claremont, Town of Catawba, Brookford, Long View, Maiden, and the Mountain View and Sherrills Ford areas of Catawba County.  Full story  The City of Newton has lifted mandatory water restrictions, on weekends only.  City of Newton restrictions   Duke Energy has updated its assessment of ongoing dought conditions.  The use of lake pumps is still banned. These men and women are able to do their vital jobs faster and more efficiently by using a newly installed phone system, which moves Catawba County toward what is known as Next Generation 911 or NG911.  Full story

The County also won the United Way Fair Share Giving Award in its division, with the greatest number of employees pledging as "Fair Share" givers.  Full story
