Catawba County Animal Shelter's public hours will change beginning May 1, 2009.
The shelter will be open to the public from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with Saturday public hours to expand to 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The change follows a six month study of visiting patterns at the shelter and will allow staff additional time to keep the shelter clean, and to examine and treat animals. The change is expected to create a healthier environment for the animals, staff and public. Full story

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners' next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2009, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will hold a public hearing on the closing of a 2006 Scattered Site Housing Grant that the County used to rehabilitate, clear or relocate, and provide emergency repairs to homes located across the county; and consider proposed new fire insurance district maps that are expected to save almost 700 home owners an average of $105 a year in insurance costs.
The Board will also consider a transfer of funds remaining in the budget for the expansion of the County jail in Newton to fund Catawba County's share of the costs to renovate the Burke-Catawba District Confinement Facility; the appropriation of existing fund balance of the Oxford Fire Department so the department can purchase a new pumper truck; appropriation of funds for payment of contract services to locate business personal property that has not been listed for taxes; and an agreement granting right of way along County-owned property at the Eco Complex on Rocky Ford Road to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
