Catawba County cuts $1 million and 26 positions from current budget in response to worsening economic conditions.

Catawba County officials have been working continuously in recent months to maintain a balanced budget in the current fiscal year, in the wake of constantly changing economic conditions. They have also expressed disappointment about recent actions by State government to freeze or recall funds earmarked for appropriation to the local government level.  Full story

Sherrills Ford Convenience Center to remain open until May 17. 

Catawba County received a letter from Carolina Centers LLC on March 12 extending the date by which the County must vacate the property to May 31, 2009.  Full story

Data mailers to be sent out as Catawba County begins 2011 revaluation process.

Property owners can help insure the accuracy of the next revaluation by verifying data.  Data verification sheets, scheduled to be mailed to all home owners on March 20, 2009, will show basic information the County Tax Office has on file for each given property. Owners are requested to verify the information found on the data verification sheet, make any necessary corrections, and return the form to the revaluation office.  Full story

The Catawba County Board of CommissionersThe Catawba County Board of Commissioners' next meeting is set for 7:00 pm on Monday, March 16, 2009 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.

The Board will receive an update from County Manager J. Thomas Lundy on the impact of current economic conditions on the County budget for the current fiscal year; consider awarding a contract, in the amount of $100,750, for the design of a planned Rocky Ford Road/Startown Road water project, to AECOM, Inc., and recognize Catawba County Public Health, which was recently accredited by the North Carolina Local Health Department Accreditation Board, when the Board meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 16, 2009, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.

The Board will also consider a resolution authorizing a 1.2% gross receipts tax on the short-term rental or lease of heavy equipment effective July 1, 2009, as authorized by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2008 when it exempted this equipment from the property tax base (businesses dealing in this equipment will have the option to apply to the County Tax Assessor for the property tax exemption); a budget revision to account for funds received by Public Health in prior years that are restricted for specific purposes; an application for a State grant for the Criminal Justice Partnership Program; a set of tax refund requests; and a new Records Retention and Disposition Schedule for the Sheriff's Office. The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Catawba Center will offer a six week course on "Eating Smart At Home".  Registration is required no later than Monday, March 23.  Full story

Friends of the Catawba County Library planning big book sale.

The sale will be held April 30 through May 2 at the Main Library in Newton.  “The community will benefit in several ways,” said Lynne Bolick Reed, Library Services Coordinator. “The sale allows us to recycle materials to other readers, helps families save money and keeps good used materials out of the landfill. Friends is also able to raise funds for their projects.”  Special bargain pricing will be available on Saturday, May 2.   Full story

Beekeeping for "beeginners" classes coming soon!

Interested in learning about beekeeping?  The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Catawba Center is offering a basic course on beekeeping in late March and early April.  Bee biology, the equipment you'll need, and management of your stock and pests that threaten yours bees will be covered.  Full story
