Catawba County to hold March 17 information meeting in Sherrills Ford on opportunities for passive recreation at the planned Mountain Creek Park and the upcoming expansion of sewer service in the southeastern part of the county.
More details have been announced about an informational meeting to be held from 4 until 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 17 in the cafeteria at Sherrills Ford Elementary School at
8103 Sherrills Ford Road. The Board of Commissioners will follow that information meeting by holding their only meeting for March at the school cafeteria, beginning at 7 p.m. Read more about the March 17 community meeting! |
The current statewide ban on outdoor burning extends across all of Catawba County.
All outdoor burning is currently prohibited. Catawba County Fire Marshal David Pruitt has the authority, as do all fire marshals across the state, to extend the ban declared by N.C. Governor Mike Easley to within 100 feet of a dwelling. Because of the continuing drought conditions in our area, Pruitt has declared a ban on all outdoor burning in Catawba County.

Catawba County Animal Shelter completes transition to the use of lethal injections in most cases when an animal must be euthanized.
Carbon monoxide gas will be used only in cases where the health and safety of staff would be threatened by direct contact with an animal. Full story |

Catawba County officials recently discussed ways to strengthen local and regional emergency first responder communications policies and procedures, with peers from across the nations.
“The ability of local first responders to communicate with each other, as well as neighboring counties and cities, in real time is incredibly important during an emergency,” said Catawba County Commissioner Barbara Beatty, one of those who attended. “Disasters in recent years have made this crystal clear.” Full story |

Dr. Roxanne Newton of Mitchell Community College will present “The Fabric of Hope and Resistance: North Carolina Women on Strike” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, at the Main Library in Newton. Meet the Eastern Bluebird. Long known as “Flying Bits of Sky,” these beautiful native birds are also believed to represent the earliest signs of spring. Join Bob Warmuth, Bluebird Project Coordinator for Lake Hickory Country Club, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, at the Catawba Science Center. The program is free with CSC admission: $5 for adults, $3 for youth (3 to 18), seniors (62 and over), college students and active military (with current ID), free for CSC members.
