Catawba County to hold March 17 community information meeting in Sherrills Ford on opportunities for passive recreation, including parks, in the southeastern part of the county.
The informational meeting will be held from 4 until 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 17 in the cafeteria at Sherrills Ford Elementary School at
8103 Sherrills Ford Road. Citizens are invited to drop in during those hours, at their convenience, to talk one-on-one with County staff about preliminary plans for a Mountain Creek Park. Utilities and Engineering staff will also have information about the expansion of sewer service and the location of a new solid waste convenience center in the southeastern part of the County. The Sherrills Ford Branch Library will also be represented. The Board of Commissioners will follow that information meeting by holding its regular meeting for mid-March at the school cafeteria, beginning at 7 p.m. More details will follow in future issues of Catawba County E-News! |
Catawba County Public Health and 30 local partners finish a community health assessment that identified four health priorities.
The assessment identified significant health data trends from diverse groups and area health experts. After all the data was reviewed, the following health priorities were determined: access to health care for uninsured adults, childhood obesity, substance abuse, and cancer. Full story |

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners' next meeting is set for 7:00 pm on Monday, February 18, 2008 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will hold public hearings on 1) a request to rezone a 22.82 acre parcel, at 5374 Highway 150 East in the Sherrills Ford Small Area Planning District, from R-20 Residential to PD-CD Planned Development-Conditional District, and 2) a request to rezone two parcels totaling 22.16 acres, at 7473 Sherrills Ford Road in the Sherrills Ford Small Area Planning District, from R-20 Residential to PD Planned Development; and consider delegating authority to the County’s Public Services Administrator to conduct an open meeting concerning preferred alternates for the Southeast Catawba County Wastewater project, when the Board meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, February 18, 2008, in the Robert E. Hibbitts Meeting Room of the 1924 Courthouse, at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will also consider a request to add two Federally funded, full-time positions to Catawba County Public Health’s Women, Infant and Children’s, or WIC Program, to work with breast feeding mothers and provide nutritional support to program participants; and a resolution recognizing and celebrating the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners’ centennial. The Board will also issue a proclamation declaring February 17- 24, 2008 as “Courage to Care Week”, during which a fund raising campaign will begin to raise $2.5 million for construction of a new twelve-bed inpatient hospice facility at the Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley. The Catawba County Library System has named a new Youth Services Librarian.
Richard Griffin, Jr. of Hickory, who recently earned a Masters Degree in Library Science, will be involved with community outreach and programming for children and youth through age 18, and assist with posting youth information on the library's website. Full story

The County Library System is seeking your opinion!
The annual patron survey starts on Thursday, February 14, during “Love Your Library” open houses at each of the seven library locations. Patrons will be offered refreshments and the opportunity to fill out a simple survey to let staff know how well they’re doing. They'll be asked to rate library services as excellent, good or fair, and identify the types of programs that most interest them. Full story |
