Sherrills Ford Solid Waste Convenience Center to close effective March 16, 2009, after County is asked to vacate property.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners has instructed staff to prepare the Newton Convenience Center, at 2436 Bethany Church Road, to receive the waste beginning on Tuesday, March 17th. The Newton Convenience Center’s hours of operation will be increased from 40 to 48 hours per week, and it will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Full story

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners' next meeting is set for 7:00 pm on Monday, February 16, 2009 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will hold four public hearings on 1) a request by Mr. Larry D. Drum and Ms. Denise D. Wright to rezone 3.97 acres at 2852 Buffalo Shoals Road and 4144, 4188, and 4194 Highway 16 South from RC Rural Commercial and R-40 Residential to HC Highway Commercial; 2) a request of Palliative Care and Hospice of Catawba Valley to rezone 5.2 acres, located at 7473 Sherrills Ford Road in the Sherrills Ford Small Area Planning District, from R-20 Residential to PD Planned Development; 3) a request to name an unnamed street off Highway 16 South as Bryant Jones Drive; and 4) the County's proposed application for Community Development Block Grants in fiscal year 2009-10; and consider accepting grant funds to develop a Civic Leadership Academy through which high school students will learn about local government, issues and leadership skills, when the Board meets at 7 pm on Monday, February 16, 2009, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will also consider a change in the County's Building Inspection Fee Schedule to include green building incentives, which would provide limited rebates, not to exceed $500, to promote and increase renewable and sustainable energy technologies and green buildings certification for homes and businesses; establishment of a new pay classification for Public Health's Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Office, which will not have any actual financial impact on the County budget; an update on the use of new technologies by the County and a presentation from the Catawba County Youth Council. The Board will also present a Certificate of Commendation to the Newton-Conover High School football team, winners of the 2008 North Carolina 2-A football championship. Full agenda

Catawba County Emergency Services and Communications Center create data base that could save lives.
Catawba County has developed a data base that will store information about Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) located throughout our community. An AED is a device used to administer an electric shock (defibrillation) to the heart during certain types of sudden cardiac death. Research shows early recognition of the emergency, activation of the Emergency Response System (by phoning 9-1-1 immediately), early CPR, early defibrillation, and early advanced care are important steps in treating victims of abrupt loss of heart function. Catawba County, Hickory, to present program to help architects and developers redevelop existing buildings. The introduction to the North Carolina Rehab. Sheriff's Office offers advice on home security after reports of suspicious activity.
The Catawba County Sheriff's Office is warning citizens, after a recent report of a suspicious activity in the county, that now is the time to think about home security. A citizen reported to the Sheriff's Office that a man wearing a jacket with a patch showing the insignia of a well known package delivery company came to their door and asked if the family had received a package from the same delivery company. They had just received a package, but from a different delivery company. The Sheriff's Office is investigating. Full story
