Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting set for 9:30 am on Monday, February 5, 2007 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will continue public hearings on a proposed Unified Development Ordinance and is expected to act on the ordinance, and will receive an update on discussions Catawba County officials have had with officials in surrounding counties regarding a possible State-mandated merger of mental health services.
The Board will also receive a report on the new Champions of Education initiative and consider a revision to the current Mental Health Services budget to account for additional State funding and an adjustment to reflect actually billable Medicaid services; the designation of the Department of Social Services as the County’s lead agency on aging for fiscal years 2007-2010; and a set of tax refunds. It will issue a proclamation declaring February 18-24, 2007 as NC Association of School Based/School Linked Health Centers Week and recognize Sibongiseni Buthelezi, Manager of Visible Service Delivery for the City of Johannesburg, South Africa, who is spending three weeks in Catawba County as part of a program of study of government in the United States.

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office has added a page to its web site through which citizens may subscribe to receive wireless Amber Alert notifications.
Statistics show that the first three hours after a child's abduction are most critical to recovery efforts. Information regarding Amber Alerts, which have helped to safely recover more than 300 children by distributing information about missing and possibly abducted children nationwide, will be sent as text messages to cell phones of those who sign up. The Heart Gallery of Catawba Valley will feature a photography exhibit of portraits of children available for adoption, to raise funds to support the mission of Family Builders of Catawba Valley, on Friday, February 16, 2007 at Newton-Conover Civic and Perfomance Place.
In support of the mission of Family Builders of Catawba Valley to create, build, strengthen and sustain families through foster care and adoption, The Heart Gallery of Catawba Valley will be held on Friday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Newton-Conover Civic and Performance Place, with a photography exhibit featuring portraits of children available for adoption, musical showcase, silent auction and hors d’oeurves. The Catawba County Library will be supporting this year's version of The Big Read with several events planned for February and March.
James McBride’s touching memoir, The Color of Water, is this year’s selection for the countywide literacy effort sponsored by CVCC, Lenoir-Rhyne College, the Hickory Public Library system and the Catawba County Library System. The book concerns McBride’s family, headed by a black father and a white mother who was Jewish.
The mission of The Big Read is to promote the power of books and the importance of literature.
The capstone event will feature a reading and jazz performance by McBride at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2007 at CVCC. That event and other support activities are free and open to the public.

The Catawba County Register of Deeds Office is now accepting debit cards for payment for most documents.
Donna Hicks Spencer, Catawba County's Register of Deeds, is pleased to announce that the Register of Deeds Office is now accepting debit cards, with no additional charge, on everything except Real Estate Recordings. "We are the second Register of Deed's Office in the State to offer this convenience to the public and feel that it will help them get in and out a little faster," Spencer said. "Although we are accepting debit cards, please keep in mind the North Carolina General Statues does NOT allow us to release any Certified Vital Record by phone, fax or email."
