Catawba County puts the spotlight on its Green Initiatives

You may be surprised to learn some of the things Catawba County has done to become more "green", both in terms of nationally recognized accomplishments and programs put into place by many County departments. Duke Energy has updated its water conservation and management strategies to meet ongoing dought conditions.
Duke Energy says
its "operational strategy will continue to focus on conserving as much water as possible",

Previously existing restrictions across Catawba County remain in place. The City of Hickory continues with Stage 3 mandatory water restrictions, which apply to water customers in Hickory, Conover, Claremont, Town of Catawba, Brookford, Long View, Maiden, and the Mountain View and Sherrills Ford areas of Catawba County. The Catawba County Board of Commissioners' next meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2008 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will receive a report from the County Tax Collector on the total amount of unpaid real property taxes for 2007 and consider a resolution authorizing the Tax Collector to advertise delinquent tax liens; an agreement with the United States Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration and Catawba Valley Community College to secure a $1 million grant for the college, and authorization of the removal of marriage certificate binders from the Register of Deeds Office for document preservation, when the Board meets at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2008, in the Robert E. Hibbitts Meeting Room of the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will also consider declaring the service side arm and badge of Sheriff’s Deputy Alan Pope as surplus, and present these items to Deputy Pope on the occasion of his retirement. The Board will recognize the County Budget staff, which has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association for the eighteenth consecutive year, and issue a Certificate of Commendation to the Catawba County E-News Team, to recognize two recent national awards for the E-News. Profiling Catawba County departments...Mental Health Services
One of the suggestions we received in the survey of Catawba County E-News readers was that we begin profiling different County departments. We'll be doing one profile of a County department each month. We're beginning with Mental Health Services for a very specific reason. Charlotte Symphony Orchestra will headline April BIG READ event at Catawba County Library, with a tribute to the textile mill villages featured in this year's selection.
The Charlotte Symphony Ensemble will appear April 26 at Maiden High School Auditorium as the culminating event for the BIG Read 2008. The 13-member group will accompany David Crowe’s “Mill Village: A Piedmont Rhapsody,” a multimedia tribute to textile mill villages and the people who lived and worked in them. Full story
