The Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 2, 2009 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will consider appropriating funds for the design and engineering of a Blackburn-Plateau Water Supply Loop Project to provide infrastructure needed for economic development, job creation, environmental improvement, drinking water provision and fire protection in those parts of the county; and the adoption of a resolution supporting the Carolina Thread Trail project, which will preserve and connect open lands in the region; when the Board meets at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 2, 2009, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will also hear a presentation by the Friends of the Sherrills Ford Library on the group’s vision for a new library and community/cultural center for Southeast Catawba County; consider an exception to the County Personnel Code which would adjust the paid holidays for County employees for Christmas 2009 and 2010 to better serve the needs of the public; appropriation of an additional $90,000 for consultant fees to process an anticipated increase in new and co-location cell tower permit applications through the end of the fiscal year; the authorizing of right of way agreements for the construction, maintenance and operation of an electrical power line to serve three Southeastern Catawba County Wastewater project pump stations; a budget revision to account for Solid Waste Disposal Tax reimbursement received from the State; a resolution in support of the appointment of an area citizen to the North Carolina Board of Community Colleges; and acceptance of the County Tax Collector’s report on delinquent 2008 real estate property tax and adoption of a resolution for the advertisement of all unpaid tax liens. The Board will also issue a Certificate of Commendation to Catawba County Social Services, which accepted a State Division of Social Services’ Challenge for Children to reduce the backlog of children in foster care and succeeded in reducing this backlog by 21% in 2007. The Board of Commissioners top goal over the last two years has been job creation. Some successes have been noted, while planning and discussion continue on ways to follow up on announcements of new and expanded facilities that are bringing more jobs to the county. Full story

Early detection is key to preventing cervical cancer.
Last year an estimated 399 women in North Carolina were diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 124 died from the disease. Cervical cancer is typically preventable and slow growing, often occurring without any symptoms. Due to the silent nature of the disease, early detection is vital. Full story |
History talks scheduled for February at County Library.
As the county begins the Big Read 2009, based on Geraldine Brooks’ Civil War novel, March, the County Library System will host a series of free programs at the Main Library in Newton.
