The Centralina Council of Governments, on behalf of Burke, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, and Mecklenburg Counties, has contracted with Photo Science, Inc., to obtain digital aerial photography throughout all seven of these counties. Full story

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing to receive public comment on a proposed application for a federal grant to fund the purchase, rehabilitation and sale of previously foreclosed properties to first time homebuyers in the county; and will consider endorsing the establishment of a Social Services Aging Planning Leadership Team and development of a Children's Agenda for the county through a strategic planning process, when the Board meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.
The Board will also consider the purchase of property adjacent to the Catawba Valley Community College campus, to be used as a Center for Emerging Manufacturing Solutions; receive a report from Social Services Director John Eller on the changing face of public assistance; and consider appropriating funds for the demolition of the old St. Stephens Elementary School and rescheduling the Board’s current subcommittee meeting time to better accommodate the members’ schedules. Land owners with damage from beavers may access beaver management program.
Catawba County is now enrolled in a North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission program that offers assistance to land owners who have been troubled by beavers, at a cost that can be far less than the land owner might face while trying to solve the problem on their own. Full story |
Civil War novel has been selected for the BIG READ 2009!
March by Geraldine Brooks is the county-wide BIG Read pick for 2009. The kickoff will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, at the SALT Block Green near the Arts & Science Center in Hickory. Now in its fourth year, the BIG Read is a collaboration of Catawba County Library System, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Catawba Valley Community College and Hickory Public Library System, which is this year’s lead agency. The mission of The Big Read is to promote the power of books and the importance of literature. Full story
