Catawba County Board of Commissioners next meeting is set for 7 pm on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 1924 Courthouse, 30 North College Avenue in Newton, NC.

The Catawba County Board of CommissionersThe Catawba County Board of Commissioners will continue public hearings on a proposed Unified Development Ordinance, and is expected to take action on the proposed ordinance, when the Board meets beginning at 7 pm on Tuesday, January 16, 2007.  NOTE THE CHANGE FROM THE BOARD'S NORMAL MEETING DAY, BECAUSE COUNTY OFFICES ARE CLOSED ON THE THIRD MONDAY IN JANUARY FOR THE MARTIN LUTHER KING BIRTHDAY HOLIDAY.

A list of changes to the proposed UDO discussed by the Board at three work sessions in November and December 2006, and the entire amended UDO, are available for public review at www.catawbacountync.gov; at all branches of the County Library, and at the County Office of Planning and Community Development on the first floor of the Government Center in Newton.  Proposed revisions to the UDO   Draft of Unified Development Ordinance 1/2/07

The Board will also consider a revision to the current Mental Health Services budget to account for additional funds from the State government and receipt of a State grant; a request from Catawba Valley Community College to appropriate $237,000 from the Schools Capital Projects Fund Balance in the County budget to be used for operating costs for the college’s new Classroom, Science and Library building; and consider an agreement with Duke Energy for a ten-foot right-of-way needed for the construction, maintenance and operation of an electric power line to serve a pump station associated with a sewer line project to serve Balls Creek Elementary School, Oxford Elementary School and Bunker Hill High School.  Full agenda

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.Catawba County Offices will be closed on Monday, January 15, 2007 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday holiday.

All County offices will be closed but public safety officers and communication personnel are always on duty and Bakers Mountain and Riverbend Parks will both be open on January 15.  Catawba County wishes you a safe and happy holiday weekend!

Needle Flu shots remain available at the Catawba County Public Health Department building at 3070 11th Avenue Dr, SE in Hickory. 

Adults may "walk-in" for a shot without an appointment while children may get a flu shot by appointment.  Call 828-695-5800 to schedule an appointment.  Full story

Hikers enjoying a day in one of Catawba County's parksRiverbend Park and Bakers Mountain Park have been called "well kept secrets". But they aren't secrets to the thousands who use them every year.  Riverbend Park, off Highway 16 near the Alexander County line, is one of the largest non-state or federal parks in North Carolina. It encompasses 450 acres with nearly twelve miles of trails. You may explore a variety of wildlife habitats that range from fresh water wetlands to upland forest.  Bakers Mountain Park is located on the highest point of elevation in Catawba County (1780 feet). It features 189 acres of mature Chestnut Oak forest with nearly six miles of trail to explore. You will experience a variety of wildlife and plants that are native to the North Carolina Mountains.
