The Public Has Spoken and Concept Plans are Being Developed

By Susan Ballbach,

The Survey is closed and Public Input Forums have been held to gather your wishes for the Park Design. We had 104 people attend the forums, and 632 people taking surveys–representing around 1,800 family members. This is great participation! Thanks for your help; we got a lot of good ideas from you. Consultant, Wirth and Associates is currently working on concept plans and mapping the design. You will be invited back to give additional input before the final plans go for adoption.  Please check back on this website for updates.

Two Public Forums were Held to Gain Public Input on the Design of Mountain Creek Park

By Susan Ballbach,

Thanks to everyone who was able to attend the Public Input Forums.  We received valuable information and public participation in the preliminary design process.  One-hundred four people attended the Public Input Forums held October 19, 2016 at Sherrills Ford Elementary School, and October 25, 2016 at the Catawba County Government Center.  Attendees were shown a presentation on the environmental features, easement constraints, and potential opportunities the park could offer.  Everyone had an opportunity to participate in creative activities to identify the recreational needs of the community.  The meeting was facilitated by Gary Wirth of Wirth and Associates, the firm hired to do the park master plan and design.  If you were unable to attend one of these meetings, it is not too late to give your input.  Please take a moment to complete a Mountain Creek Park Input Survey at:  http://www.catawbacountync.gov/parks/mountain-creek-park/survey/   The survey will close November 15, 2017.

Thanks!

Attend a Community Input Meeting – October 19, 2016

By Susan Ballbach,

We need your Help!!!  Your input will help shape the future of this park in the Sherrills Ford Community of Catawba County.  The meeting is Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at the Sherrills Ford Elementary School Cafeteria.  Located at 8103 Sherrills Ford Rd., Sherrills Ford, NC  28673  The Forum will run from 6:30 to 8:30pm.  Formal presentations will be at 7:00 and 8:00pm, with breakout sessions between presentations.

p1400064To fit with people's busy schedules, a duplicate meeting will be held on October 25, 2016 at the Catawba County Government Center, Upstairs Meeting Room, located at 100A Southwest Blvd, Newton, NC  28658.

In addition to the conservation easements on the park land, the site has significant natural habitats and riparian corridors that should be preserved and enhanced.  Ball fields, soccer fields and other heavy land disturbing recreational activities are not only prohibited by the conservation easements, they would do irreparable damage to the significant habitat areas and forests throughout the property.

We envision Mountain Creek Park as a destination nature park with miles of hiking and biking trails, nature themed activities, educational opportunities and wildlife observation.  Picnic facilities, primitive camping, canoe/kayak portages and fishing piers will take advantage of the Lake Norman water frontage.

The final program for park activities will be determined through a series of public input forums and interaction with the County Park and Recreation Advisory Committee and the Board of County Commissioners.  Please come back often to this website and our Facebook page for updates on the project planning and important dates for community input and plan reviews.
