Style, Stars, and Hip-Hop
Published: July 03, 2018
The library is going all 'pop culture' as we explore what fame is and how it affects people, along with looking at the ways people are defined by their own style and personality.
To add context to the discussion, we’ll talk about the book Kanye West: Hip-Hop Star by Gretchen Weicker. The author considers how West broke from the typical rapper and hip-hop artist mold in dress, message, and intention. She also raises the topic of whether and how West has been a positive influence in the world of music.
Along with these conversations, participants will also get to connect with each other. One activity will have them all get in a circle and toss a ball of yarn back and forth randomly. As children catch the ball, they will introduce themselves to the group and share a fact about themselves. They’ll also see how the yarn creates a web of connections, illustrating the impact of our social circles and showing how easily it is for information to travel quickly and have a wide impact.
Finally, we’ll get down to the nitty-gritty and get the kids’ attention by teaching them some hip-hop basics. Our staff member Tara is also a dance instructor and will get kids up and active with age-appropriate dance moves that they can practice with their siblings and friends later on.
If your young ones would like to meet friends, have meaningful discussions about celebrity and style, and come away with a little hip-hop flair, we’d love to have them join us at the St. Stephens Branch Library on Thursday, July 12 at 3 pm.
