Let's Make Mom Feel Special!

Let's Make Mom Feel Special!

Published: May 01, 2018

Sunday, May 13, is Mother’s Day, when we as a nation pay tribute to the women who gave us life and raised us. To honor this work and their sacrifices, the library is offering an array of activities to make mom feel special and to create tokens of our affection for her.

At the Southwest Branch Library on Tuesday, May 8 from 6-7 pm, we’re setting up a special-occasion hand spa. Moms are invited to relax and indulge themselves with soothing treatments before going home with our DIY spa products.

At the Main Library in Newton on Wednesday, May 9 at 10 am and 4 pm, we’re inviting participants to create a beauty treat in a Mason jar. These pampering concoctions are intended to give her well-being a boost, so join us to make either a sugar or salt scrub or a customized tea blend. We’ll make the gifts extra special by creating personalized labels to dress up each jar. Please register by calling 828.465.8664.

At the St. Stephens Branch Library on Thursday, May 10 at 4 pm, we’ll be making doodle art bookmarks. These handmade reminders offer a terrific opportunity to tailor something for mom that she can use for years. We’ll provide the supplies, including ribbon and beads to add a little bling to your handiwork.

Also at the St. Stephens Branch Library on Friday, May 11 at 4:30 pm, teens can celebrate mom by decorating a glass vase for her special day. We’ll use Mod Podge, glitter, and ribbon to cater to mom’s color and design preferences, so come with creative ideas for assembly. We’ll also have card stock available, so each teen can fashion a card for Mom too. All materials will be provided. Please register by calling 828.466.6821.

At the Main Library in Newton on Monday, Mary 14 at 5:30 pm, we’ll offer a special Spanish-language celebration where we honor Hispanic mothers with traditional dances, songs, and crafts. We’d love to have lots of families participating, and all are welcome, whether you’re Hispanic or not.

While moms are grateful for any gestures of love made to them by their children and families, most mothers treasure the simpler, handmade, imperfect items that kids produce for them. That’s the kind of gift we’re hoping to create, and we’d love to help you ensure that this day dedicated to mom is a memorable one. Join us to make something sweet and heartfelt!
