INTRODUCING NEW RECYCLING PROGRAMS FOR CATAWBA COUNTY
With growing concerns about outdated electronics and hazardous waste
filling our landfills, Catawba County is introducing two new recycling
programs to divert cell phones and ink/laser jet cartridges from the
Blackburn Landfill. Special recycling containers, where citizens
may bring these items for proper recycling, have been placed at the
County’s five Convenience Centers, all seven branches of the Catawba
County Library, and in the County office buildings listed below:
Government Center, Newton-First floor entrance
Cooperative Extension, Newton-First floor entrance
Public Health, Hickory-Main foyer area
Register of Deeds, Newton-Justice Center
Animal Control, Newton-Waiting area
Blackburn Landfill office building, Newton
You may get directions to any of the County's five Convenience Centers on the County's internet site.
Those who bring cell phones or cartridges for recycling are asked to keep these tips in mind:
Cell phones
Any type or brand of cell phone will be accepted for recycling, whether
they work or not. Accessories will not be needed, but always
remember to leave the battery intact when recycling any cell phone.
Cartridges
Please enclose your ink/laser jet cartridges in a plastic bag before
depositing into the recycling containers, to help control toner
spillage.
"Catawba County encourages everyone to help us further reduce the
amount of waste going into our landfill by recycling cell phones and
ink/laser cartridges in our new containers," said Amanda Kain, Catawba
County's Waste Reduction Coordinator. "These containers are
reserved just for cell phones and cartridges. We have already
found some other kinds of waste dropped in some of the containers that
should not have been placed in them. Thank you for your efforts
to keep our landfill free of these materials and for your participation
in Catawba County’s new recycling programs!"
