AMERICAN RED CROSS NOW BEST CONTACT FOR RESIDENTS NEEDING HELP IN RECOVERY FROM FLOODING

As Catawba County continues to recover from the damage caused by extensive flash flooding on July 27 and emergency management operations transition back to a more normal condition of readiness, County officials say the Hickory office of the American Red Cross is now the best contact for any persons still in need of assistance and referral as they recover from their own individual situations.

“The Hickory Office of the American Red Cross, at 828-322-4151 or http://www.redcross.org/nc/hickory is now the best contact for those needing assistance or a referral for assistance,” said Karyn Yaussy, Catawba County Emergency Management Coordinator. “They will continue to coordinate all referrals for our Flood Assistance Partnership. The special hotlines and disaster assistance centers needed in the initial days and weeks after the flood are no longer necessary. This is normal in recovery from any kind of disastrous events such as the recent flooding and is a sign that we are moving toward complete recovery.”

Although several County agencies continue to work in a partnership with a number of non-profit agencies in the county to help those still needing assistance, the determination of who will receive disaster assistance from the State and U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is now up to those agencies following the closing of a Disaster Assistance Center on August 15. This process could take weeks to be completed.
