Catawba County’s E-911 Communications Center is one of the busiest and most important places in the county. The center provides 911 dispatch services for over thirty-five agencies and departments in Catawba County, including the Sheriff's Office, police departments in Catawba, Claremont, Conover, Long View and Maiden, twenty-five fire stations, six rescue squads, seven EMS stations and for Catawba County Emergency Management.
The center uses five telecommunicators on both the first and second shifts, and four staff people on third shift. Over the past several years, it has averaged well over 40,000 9-1-1 calls a day, which equates to more than 120 emergency calls every day. When all of the calls the center received are factored in, the total has averaged more than 150,000 or over 400 calls each day.
The center uses seven Motorola Centrecom Elite consoles, seven Positron IAP telephone sets, VisionAir CAD and Positrons PowerMap that includes 42" plasma displays for Phase II mapping technology. Some of these systems are supported financially through a 70 cent per month surcharge placed on all landline (wired) telephone lines. (The average statewide charge is $1.00).
The Catawba County Communucations Center staff maintains a comprehensive and informative web site, including special pages for kids and teenagers, where you can learn much more. You'll find important special sections, on when you should call 9-1-1 and when you should not, that everyone who is old enough to use a telephone should know.
