CATAWBA COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES HOPES TO SEE ANIMALS
“HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS”

Catawba County Animal Services staff will hold a “Home For The Holidays” Adopt-athon at the Animal Shelter, located adjacent to and behind the Justice Center off Highway 321 Business in Newton, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2008. Animal Services staff will spotlight animals that are suitable for adoption, and provide the public with an opportunity to have pets vaccinated for rabies and a chance to learn more about training for dogs.

“We are always looking for ways to increase the number of adoptions from the Animal Shelter,” said Jay Blatche, Catawba County’s Animal Services Manager. “Our shelter is frequently overcrowded, which is a threat to the health of all the animals housed there. We’re hoping that having an extended adoption event on a Saturday will encourage people, who are ready to be loving and responsible pet owners, to come and adopt a dog or cat. The Adopt-athon we held in April was very successful and we are hoping to place even more animals into loving new homes on December 13.”

“We vaccinated 946 animals for rabies during our April rabies clinics, but we know many others may be due for a vaccination,” Blatche continued. “The rabies vaccination is very important. We’ve now had eleven confirmed cases of rabies in wild animals in 2008, after the wild animals came into contact with dogs and one cat. Most of the animals were not current on their rabies vaccination and many owners had to make the difficult choice of either having the animal quarantined with a licensed veterinarian for six months or surrendering the dogs for euthanasia.”

Highlights of the December 13 Animal Adopt-athon will include:

• A rabies vaccination clinic

• Basic obedience dog training class from 11 a.m. until 12 Noon

• A visit from McGruff The Crime Dog

• A raffle for gift certificates to local restaurants and dog gift baskets with such items as shampoo, collars, combs and treats, with funds raised to go to an Animal Shelter Expansion Fund.

• Free leashes to those who adopt a pet, and “treat bags” with animal-related information inside, measuring cups for food and toys

• Displays by different vendors of products for pets.

The County is also continuing a shelter volunteer program, and will be asking anyone who is interested in volunteering to work at the shelter to indicate their interest during the event.
