ANTIFREEZE: is banned from Landfill disposal and should be recycled. Antifreeze can be recycled at the Bethany Church Rd and Blackburn Convenience Centers only, free of charge. |

APPLIANCES/WHITE GOODS: are banned from Landfill disposal and should be recycled. Old appliances, such as refrigerators, stoves, washing
machines, clothes dryers, etc. are accepted only at
the Blackburn Landfill facility and the Blackburn Convenience Center only, at no charge.
It is required that refrigerator doors be removed and all units must be completely empty and free of food. The County contracts with an outside firm to collect and remove the appliances from the landfill, therefore, creating a source of revenue for the County, which contributes to maintaining the County's low tipping fee. |

ASPHALT/CONCRETE/BRICK/BLOCK: The (C&D) Construction and Demolition Landfill is located at 3993 Rocky Ford Rd, Newton. Asphalt, Concrete, Brick, and Block are accepted at no charge only if the material is free of reinforcement materials. The materials are crushed and used on landfill roadways creating a reduction in gravel purchases. See the Solid Waste Disposal Fee Schedule for more information concerning Asphalt, Concrete, Brick and Block that contains reinforcement materials. |

BATTERIES: All types of batteries can be recycled at the County's Residential bi-annual Household Hazardous Waste one-day collection events held the first Saturday of May at the Government Center in Newton and the first Saturday of November at the LP Frans Stadium in Hickory. Both events are held from 9am-3pm rain or shine and are free of charge to the citizens of Catawba County. Also, collection containers are located on each level of the Government Center in Newton for your convenience. CELL PHONES: Any type or brand of cell phone will be accepted for recycling, whether they work or not. Accessories wil not be needed, but always remember to leave the battery intact when reycling any cell phone. Special reycling containers have been placed for cell phone collection at the County's five Convenience Centers, all seven branches of the Catawba County Library, and in the County Office buildings listed below:

CHRISTMAS TREES: The Christmas season usually leaves you with stacks of leftovers. Real Christmas trees (remove all ornaments, lights and tinsel) can be recycled at each of the five Convenience Centers sites after Christmas. Call for dates and times. Wrapping paper, except for foil type, SBS Board (shirt boxes & shoe boxes) can be recycled throughout the entire year in mixed paper. |

SCRAP TIRES: are banned from Landfill disposal and should be recycled. The
County contracts with an outside firm to pick up scrap tires at
the Blackburn Landfill and several dealer sites located throughout
the County. See the Solid Waste Disposal Fee Schedule
for more information concerning scrap tire fees.
When you purchase new tires, you will be charged a 2% disposal tax as required by the State. The tire dealer must collect, document and pay the disposal tax to the State. Copies of State tax reports are sent to the Blackburn Landfill Office for tracking. Before the tire dealer can dispose of the used tires, tax documentation must be verified. |

TELEPHONE BOOKS: To recycle
telephone books, just place with
mixed paper or newspaper and recycle throughout the entire year.
No special container is used. |

MOTOR OIL/FILTERS: are banned from Landfill disposal and should be recycled. Used
motor oil and filters may be recycled at (4) four Convenience
Center sites located at Blackburn, Bethany Church Rd, Cooksville and Oxford. There is no charge to recycled used oil and filters, but is restricted
to residential use only. There is a 5 gallon limit at convenience centers. Motor oil and filters can also be properly disposed at the County’s Residential bi-annual household hazardous waste one-day collection events held the first Saturday of May at the Government in Newton and the first Saturday of November at the LP Frans Stadium in Hickory. WOOD/YARD WASTE: The (C&D)
Construction and Demolition Landfill is located at 3993 Rocky Ford Rd,
Newton. Materials accepted
are:
Brush and limbs
Leaves; grass and leaves that need to be debagged
Wood; furniture blocks, pallets, painted and treated wood

The
wood/yard waste products that are disposed of at the C&D Landfill are
ground and chipped for various uses. Clean furniture blocks, brush and limbs are ground
for mulch sales. Leaves and grasses are combined with mulch for compost
sales.
In 1998, Catawba County received approval from the State to use mulch
as an alternate daily cover, resulting in a decreased need for soil use
as a daily cover. This method requires State approval. |
