Lake Hickory was created in 1927 with the completion of the Oxford Dam. The dam parallels the NC Highway 16 bridge over the Catawba River between I-40 and Taylorsville. The lake covers almost 4,223 acres with 105 miles of shoreline. Full pond elevation is 935 feet. Lake Hickory is a reliable source of water for the nearby cities of Hickory and Longview, North Carolina.
Lookout Shoals Lake was formed in 1915 with the construction of the Lookout Shoals Hydroelectric Station. The lake has approximately 1,305 acres of surface area and 37 miles of shoreline. Full pond elevation for Lookout Shoals Lake is 838 feet. Duke Power provides two boating access areas on the lake in cooperation with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
Lake Norman is the largest of the Lakes that make up the Catawba River chain. In fact, it is nearly as large as the other ten lakes combined. It is known as an "inland sea" with 520 miles of shoreline and a surface area of more than 32,475 acres. Its length is 33.6 miles from Lookout Shoals Hydroelectric Station Dam to Cowans Ford Dam. Full pond elevation is 760 feet. The water of Lake Norman is used in two ways to provide electricity to the Piedmont Carolinas. It is used to power the generators at Cowans Ford Hydroelectric Station and by Marshall Steam Station and McGuire Nuclear Station to cool the steam that drives the turbines.
The lake provides a dependable supply of water to Lincoln County, Davidson, Mooresville, Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Huntersville, North Carolina. The lake is also a year around recreational lake for fishing and other water related activities.
