The Catawba County Detention Facility is housed in the Catawba County Justice Center in Newton. The original facility was built in 1980 and was designed to hold eighty-nine inmates. In August 2007, an expansion was completed which added one hundred-seventy-six new beds. A full time staff of seventy oversees the around the clock attention to inmates. The Catawba County Detention Facility is divided into several areas: The master control station and three sub control stations, maximum security, general housing, initial housing, trustee section, female section, food service area, administrative offices, medical area, warehouse area and intake/release area.
