Catawba County is dedicated to assisting our employees in enhancing work skills, knowledge and proficiencies, believing that in turn this benefits the organization as a whole. Below is a listing of some of the programs sponsored by the Human Resources Department that are available to County employees.
Mini-Course of Catawba County Government
During Mini-Course, County employees meet 1-2 times a month in an informative but relaxed, lunch-and-learn environment for a 9 month period to be introduced to services that each Catawba County Department provides and receive a comprehensive understanding of how county government works. In turn, employees will be better prepared to assist citizens with
questions and issues, including directing citizens to the department that can most
effectively assist them. All employees from the newest to our most seasoned veterans are
encouraged to attend. This course ends with a graduation luncheon sponsored by the County.
Supervisory Education Program
Each year, the Human Resources Department offers a year-long education program
to supervisors and others in leadership roles. This program concentrates on strengthening employees’ knowledge of Catawba County policies and procedures. It is also designed to enhance employees’ leadership and management skills. We also encourage aspiring
supervisors to attend. The Supervisory Education Program consists of half-day training sessions that are held about every two weeks. Courses are taught by a combination of qualified
internal and external experts who provide information on a variety of subjects. All supervisors as well as those aspiring to be supervisors are encouraged to participate.
Spanish Classes
Each year, an eight-week course on the “Conversational Elements of the Spanish Language” is offered. Participants meet weekly for two hours of instruction. The material is intensive but presented in a way that is both informative and fun. Sessions are conducted almost entirely in Spanish, and participants are encouraged to speak in Spanish and use what they are learning through conversational activities. Participants will learn basic expressions, greetings, introductions, asking questions, basic verbs, colors, times, dates, days, the alphabet, professions, clothing, and other basic concepts to communicate with Spanish-speaking citizens of Catawba County.
Mentoring Program
The Mentoring Program is designed to assist and guide talented County employees to acquire advanced skills and job knowledge through work-related partnerships with experienced coworkers. The program also serves as an essential recruitment and retention tool.
On-Line Training
In order to provide a more convenient way for employees to participate in necessary trainings, an on-line training schedule has been established. This process limits the amount of time and resources that have to be placed in the training both by the employees and the trainer.
